2026 Conference Information - Empower & Elevate

Friday, Jan 30: Student Career Development Day
Saturday, Jan 31: Professional Development Day
Dance educators have the power to shape students' experiences and perceptions, positioning dance education as a transformative force.  Through dance, students develop critical life skills such as discipline, resilience, and collaboration – skills that extend far beyond the studio. By prioritizing pedagogical philosophies that elevate and empower students, dance educators can make a lasting impact on their students' lives and the broader community. Dance provides a platform for individuals to share their voices, embrace their identities, and connect with others in meaningful ways.
On a broader scale, dance education strengthens communities by celebrating cultural diversity, promoting inclusivity, and advocating for social change.  As educators with the freedom to design our own curricula, we are in a unique position to shape learning environments that reflect the world around us.  We must ensure that dance functions both as a window into the world and as a mirror reflecting the diverse identities and experiences of our students.  By continuously evolving to their needs, educators create an environment where dance is not only accessible and inspiring, but also fosters a more connected, compassionate society.

Guiding Questions:
  • How do dance educators create inclusive environments, valuing each student's unique contributions while also adapting programs to accommodate students with a range of learning abilities and needs?
  • How can dance educators empower students to take ownership of their learning through student-centered pedagogical approaches?
  • What support do current educators need to continue to elevate their own practice, empowering them to create healthy professional and personal life goals?
  • How are dance educators across the sectors advocating for dance education at the local, state, and national level?
  • How can dance educators elevate the field by bridging the gap across sectors?

Friday, Jan 30: Student Career Development Day

An opportunity for high school (10th - 12th grades), undergraduate, and graduate students to explore ways of furthering their dance education and related career paths, while connecting with and taking workshops from NYSDEA Institutional members from across the state, attending a career panel, and networking with the broader NYS dance community.  Dance educators are also welcome to attend.

Saturday, Jan 31: Professional Development Day

A day filled with workshops, vendors, and opportunities to connect with dance educators from across NYS.  The day culminates with a closing reception following the student concert and post-performance talk back.
