The dance program at ASU offers a rich and culturally diverse curriculum, grounded in the core values of creativity, embodiment, acknowledgement and humanity. In addition to a focus on dance making, teaching practices and scholarship, the curriculum emphasizes and highlights a range of movement practices, including Hip Hop, salsa, contemporary modern dance, contemporary ballet and somatic movement inquiry.  With approximately 100 undergraduate dance majors and about 15 MFA students, the dance program is a dynamic teaching and learning environment in which production, curriculum and social partnership are mutually supportive. Each year we present an extensive season of productions and events that push the boundaries of dance. The dance faculty engage in a wide spectrum of artistic and movement practices, emphasizing creative inquiry, somatic perspectives, and trans-disciplinary research. Our aim is to advance the field of dance education and to cultivate artists, teachers, leaders, and scholars who will move and think critically across diverse careers.

 Principal duties for this position include teaching across the curriculum with a focus in: somatics, movement therapies, dance education, movement practices, or creative practices based on the expertise of the candidate. The position includes mentoring and advising students at undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, there is an expectation to work collaboratively across the School of Music, Dance and Theatre and contribute to the breadth and depth of course offerings for major and non-major students in both in-person and online learning environments. The successful candidate will supervise and mentor student projects, including senior thesis research and MFA applied projects in a range of contexts. The faculty member is expected to maintain or develop a national profile as a professional artist and/or scholar who is able to connect classroom experiences to professional practice. In addition to teaching, active participation in shared faculty governance and service within the School, Institute, and University is expected.
Required Qualifications:
•       Demonstrated ability to foster the educational and cultural needs of all ASU students who study dance, and to advance equity, diversity and inclusion in the field.
•       Demonstrated pedagogical excellence and innovation in the teaching of dance.
•       Record of creative activity and/or scholarship. 
•       Graduate degree in dance or a related field or commensurate experience; a graduate degree is required for international applicants. 

•       Strong interpersonal and communication skills; computer and media/technology skills.
Desired Qualifications 
•       Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the collegiate level and in other contexts (e.g. PreK-12, professional non-profits and companies, community organizations, health and wellness, special populations, etc.)
•       Ability to teach tap, jazz (vernacular), Afro-Caribbean, and/or continental African dance forms.
•       Experience teaching PreK-12 teacher preparation and teaching praxis courses at the collegiate level. 
•       Graduate degree in dance or Master’s Equivalency with PreK-12 certification, or Ph.D. in Dance with studies focused on education, or an EdD or PhD in Education, or professional PreK-12 Dance Education Certification with teaching experience in PreK-12 education.  
•       Somatics certification or advanced knowledge of one or more somatic practices.
•       National/International record of creative activity and/or scholarship.
•       An interest in innovative and interdisciplinary practices that broaden current notions of dance and education.
•       Ability to design and implement curriculum and programs, including online and in-person courses, in and across the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (HIDA) and in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre.
